Quick answer: For light marks on suede or nubuck, begin with dry suede tools. A brush-and-eraser kit serves a different purpose from a cleaner-and-brush sneaker bundle. Choose a liquid treatment only when the shoe and product guidance support it.
Research-based comparison: We compared manufacturer-listed contents and material guidance, checked November 4, 2026. We have not performed hands-on comparative testing. Products and bundles can change; these are use-case recommendations, not measured cleaning-performance rankings.
Compare the three approaches
| Approach | Included or needed | Good fit | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jason Markk Suede Kit | Suede brush and eraser | Dry surface maintenance | Does not include a liquid cleaner. |
| General sneaker kit | Cleaner and one or more brushes | Other compatible materials or a separately approved wet-cleaning method | An included stiff brush can be unsuitable for suede. |
| Build your own dry kit | Suede brush and eraser bought separately | Replacing only the tool you lack | Check suitability and total basket cost. |

When a suede kit is the better starting point
If the problem is loose dry dirt or a light surface mark, begin without adding water. A dedicated dry kit keeps the task focused and avoids buying bottles before you know you need them. It will not necessarily remove oil, deep dye transfer, or an old water stain.
When a general kit leaves a gap
A cleaner can list suede among its supported materials while the brush bundled with it is too firm for that surface. Check both components. Jason Markk’s Essential Kit includes its Durables brush, while its manufacturer recommends the separate Delicates brush for delicate materials. Do not treat two products from the same brand as interchangeable.
Spend on the missing tool
Already own a suitable suede brush? Compare the cost of an eraser alone before buying a second kit. Need supplies for leather and mesh too? Budget for those jobs separately so a suede purchase does not become an oversized all-purpose bundle.
Before you clean
Read the footwear label, work on dry shoes, and test a discreet area with a gentle touch. Dyed suede can bleed when wet. Stop if color transfers or the surface changes. Follow our complete suede guide for the method; this page compares tools.
Does suede need a stiff brush?
Do not use an outsole brush simply because it removes dirt quickly elsewhere. Match the tool to the material and condition. For a valuable pair, persistent staining, or uncertain care instructions, ask a specialist before escalating the treatment.
